Ocarina is a very old family of instruments, with the oldest ocarina ever found to be approximately 12,000 years old. The ocarina belongs to the family of flutes. It is generally oval in shape with four to twelve finger holes, but there are some variations.

Unlike many flutes, ocarinas do not depend on the length of the tube to produce a specific tone. Instead, the sound depends on the proportion of the total area, the holes drilled and the total cubic volume of the instrument. This means that, unlike a flute, the sound is created by the resonance of the entire cavity.
