The Quena is an ancient vertical edge-blown flute native to South America, especially used among the Ecuadorian, Chilean, Peruvian, Mexican, Bolivian, and Northern Argentine indigenous peoples. Its origin is depicted in existing paintings and drawings made by peoples who inhabited, between 200 B.C. and 600 A.D., the cities of Nazca and Chimu in Peru; where the instrument was once made from llama bone; its first specimens were made from condor bones, stone, or clay, materials later replaced by bamboo and wood.

The Quena is produced in the Natural Major scale. It has 6 generous holes plus one hole in the back for the thumb. The Quenacho is a large Quena with a deeper voice, ideal for more contemplative and meditative music. The Quenas and Quenachos reach about 2.5 registers, so a Quenacho in D serves as a Quena in G if we start the scale on the 4th degree and open half a hole on the 1st front hole. The Quenacho has the advantage of having notes below when the tonic is on the 4th degree, making the scale richer and full of possibilities. We seek to develop Quenacho production instead of Quena because we prefer deeper and more meditative sonorities and timbres.

Tunings

We produce the Quena flute in 3 tunings, with the smallest flute tuned to A (LA). Next we have tuning in G (SOL) and F (FA), with the Quena in G being the most popular tuning.

The Quenacho is a Quena of greater length and therefore of deeper sonority, with greater spacing between the holes and recommended for those who already have some practice with vertical edge-blown flutes. We produce the Quenacho in 3 tunings: E (MI), D (RE), and C (DO). With C being the flute of greatest length.

BAMBOO

The bamboo selected for these flutes is of high acoustic quality, without knots, perfectly cylindrical, and with thick walls. The bamboos are shade-dried for 6 months, treated, and sealed inside and out with Indian shellac to resist time and variations in humidity and temperature. In addition to protection against fungi.

MOUTHPIECE

The mouthpiece of the flutes is produced in bamboo and some models are produced in wood, which makes the notch thicker and more resistant.

FINISHES

The Quena and Quenacho are produced in 4 distinct finishes: natural bamboo, mahogany paint, black walnut paint (black), and tribal graphic design.

All flutes receive non-toxic varnish (Indian shellac) and colored protection cords that can be chosen on the flute page. Choose a model between Quena and Quenacho and on the flute page you will be able to choose the tuning. We do not produce in quantity, we create the flute for YOU, with total attention to sound quality.
