The Harmonics Flute is one of the oldest wind instruments. Known in the Andes as Flauta dos Abuelos (grandparents’ flute) for being played by the elders of the village to communicate with the ancestral spirits. This flute has no holes; it is built with a long narrow tube and a mouthpiece with a whistle. The quality of this whistle and the way of blowing emit the harmonic series corresponding to the root note tuning, combining intervals of octaves, fifths, and thirds.
