The Kawala is a flute (aerophone) native to Egypt, has 6 holes and is tuned in the natural major scale. The sound is produced by tilting the flute under the lips, forming an angle on the edge of the mouthpiece, and requires a lot of embouchure training to produce a satisfactory sound… being possible to reach up to 3 octaves on some notes. Once you master the embouchure, the sky is the limit—it becomes an extension of the mouth! It is one of the simplest and most powerful flutes I have ever seen. Its origin takes us back to ancient Egypt, and its structure, due to its simplicity, gives the clear sensation of being one of the first flute shapes created by humanity. For those who dream of playing the Ney, we recommend starting with the Kawala!
Although very similar to the Ney, a highly popular flute in traditional Middle Eastern music, the Kawala does not have a hole on the back like the Ney. The Kawala has a fundamental tonal structure for the Egyptian folk music community.
