When we discover Native American style flutes and feel the desire to play them, questions arise about which flute to choose to order. Send us a message in the chat or click the button to learn more about how to choose the native flute.

The Ashar Native Flute is the bamboo flute model, created following the essential formats of the Native American Flute, which is a specific style of flute developed in North America, whose current characteristics were only standardized in the second half of the twentieth century. Its main characteristics are the two chambers (slow air chamber and sound chamber) where the air passage happens through a block that directs air to the whistle. This feature offers a soft sound sensitive to breath variations, in addition to facilitating sound production. The second characteristic that definitively marked the Native American flute with an unmistakable musical style was the standardization of the minor pentatonic scale. This mysterious scale that evokes deep emotions and nature was already used by other very ancient peoples. The Native Flute has powerful vibrational characteristics that, when played, make us feel communion with nature and the feeling of "coming home" within a few minutes. It is a fast-learning flute, which facilitates musical initiation for people who have never played an instrument, creating an opportunity for them to find their music, acting as a powerful ally in meditative, breathing, and therapeutic practices.

Fingering and Note Chart for 5, 6, and 7-hole Native American Style Flute

Flutes are simple and powerful instruments, directly related to the vital movement of breathing, the exchange of energy through the breath that transports life, sound and allows expressing the unspeakable. Music, in particular melody, is nothing less than a range of vibrations interacting and relating to each other, the flute being one of the most suitable musical instruments for initiation into the universe of melodic relations and combinations.

The breath is the manifestation of life, the only thing we need to do in the first instance to keep ourselves alive is to breathe, and our respiratory system is at the same time involuntary and voluntary, it is possible to exert some control over it, so the act of blowing and producing sound is very magical because it is a creative act, it is movement; life!

The native flute has elements that favor musical awakening, that is, our innate ability to make music, and helps deconstruct the idea that only people with natural talent for music can make it.

In principle, every flute created by native peoples is considered a native flute, in the Americas, we have many native flutes, Brazil is rich in this regard, as many native peoples have their flutes. However, here we use the term “Native Flute” or Native American Style Flute, as a reference to a specific style of flute, developed in North America, whose current characteristics were only standardized in the second half of the twentieth century. Its main characteristic that differentiates it from other Amerindian native flutes is the fact that it has two chambers (slow air chamber and sound chamber) whose passage of air from one to the other happens through a block over a table creating a tunnel for the fipple (whistle/chimney). This characteristic offers a soft sound that is sensitive to variations of breath, in addition to facilitating the production of sounds.

What definitively marked the American native flute, with an unmistakable musical style, was the standardization of the minor pentatonic scale. This mysterious scale that takes us back to deep emotions and nature, was already used by other very ancient peoples. The minor pentatonic scale was incorporated into the native flute with a combination of elements that reason will hardly be able to explain, what we know is that this marriage combined in such a way that currently, the native flute has become a symbol of ancestral rescue, of connection with nature and a path of “return home”. What we can say is that words will not be enough to explain what you will feel when you play your native flute. I felt magic and beauty, vibrating peace and love in the universe; our mission is to share this magic with you.

The main advantage of the native flute is that it is an instrument of quick mastery, which facilitates musical initiation for people who have never played an instrument, creating the possibility of rescuing their musicality, acting as a powerful ally in meditative, respiratory and therapeutic practices. In a few minutes playing the flute you will notice its magical effects.

Our flutes are handcrafted creations worked one by one with great love. We care for the bamboos from harvesting, preparation, and drying for months. It is a slow and careful process. Due to the wide variety of models and customization possibilities, we need time for delivery:

The “Flute Time”.

For a flute to be born, there is an alchemical consciousness working in the invisible through 4 elements; the artisan is an interpreter of the process, and when integrated into the natural flow of the raw material and participates in each stage of gestation, develops the subtle art of knowing what each bamboo will become as a flute. The intention of the artisan is shaped by the form and nature of the material. The latent flute awaits the presence of the Being to manifest what it has been from the beginning!

If you are looking for an instrument of power and vibrational healing, this is our mission, and time is a value in our favor, necessary for the manifestation of an instrument with a Soul.

Last Hole Alignment

The choice of the last hole alignment will depend on the size of the flute and which hand is used below to close the last three holes. The vast majority of people play with the right hand below, in this case, for large flutes, we recommend that the last hole be aligned to the right, as a way to facilitate the fingering of this last note on the flute without causing discomfort to the ring finger of the right hand, this way it is easier to close the holes. But if you use the left hand at the foot of the flute (lower part) then the last hole should be shifted to the left.

For small flutes such as High E, High D, High C, B, and A, there is no need for the last hole to be to the right, in this case it can be the standard center alignment, as the flute is small in size there will be no difficulties in covering the flute holes. Remembering that to know the approximate length of each flute according to the tuning, just check our Measurements Table. For medium flutes such as G#, G, F#, F, E, D, and C, for people who have small arms, hands, or fingers, we recommend requesting the last hole to the right or left, this way it is guaranteed that there will be no difficulties in performing the fingering on the flute. For bass flutes of great length and 6 holes, we shift the holes of the ring finger of the left hand and the ring finger of the right hand, so it is very important for us to know in advance which is the upper hand (used near the face) and which is the lower hand (used near the foot of the flute).

Wooden mouthpiece or natural bamboo mouthpiece?

Watch this video! The choice between the wooden mouthpiece or the natural bamboo mouthpiece does not influence the sound quality because the sound quality is related to the whistle of the Flute and with the block or totem. The air chamber, which is where we blow, serves only to conduct the air down to the block or totem and direct this air to the whistle. The wooden mouthpiece has the advantage of giving a differentiated finish, more aesthetic and also more ergonomic because you just need to lightly touch your mouth to the mouthpiece, without needing to open your mouth, just enough to cover the small area of the mouthpiece and blow. The bamboo flute with the natural open mouthpiece does not have the aesthetics of the wooden mouthpiece, but the sound quality is the same. The advantage of the open mouthpiece is that we can easily dry it when we finish playing and in the long term this makes a difference. This is the great advantage over the wooden mouthpiece because with the wooden mouthpiece, the entry is small and very difficult to introduce any artifact to clean it. With the open bamboo mouthpiece it is possible to perform this maintenance by drying with a cloth and also removing dust with a brush. So basically that is the difference between the wooden mouthpiece and the natural bamboo mouthpiece, it does not influence the sound quality. While the wooden mouthpiece has an aesthetic and ergonomic quality, the natural bamboo mouthpiece has an instrument maintenance quality.
